Although it's a challenge, daily practices also <b>reveal</b> what my baseline is on any given day. That, like everything, inevitably <b>changes</b>.<br />

I thrive on consistency, but of course things are always changing. <br />

<i><b>Walking</b></i> is one of life's simple but wonderful experiences especially if
there's a lovely view. I have to say that I am <i><b>passionate</b></i> about walking if there's a steep hill and a view involved.<br />

I enjoy watching the light, the sky, the shadows
and the ground change, ever so slightly--or sometimes dramatically--

The better I feel the more I can embrace my existing health, cultivate my energy and nourish myself properly, when I'm <i><b>already</b></i> feeling <b>good</b>!<br />
<br />
One of my personal choices to eat as <u><b>LOCAL</b></u> and as <u><b>SEASONAL</b></u> as possible. There's a persimmon tree in my neighborhood that's on someone's property. (I wonder if it was there before or after the house was built?) The owners have a little basket they fill with the ripe fruit. One day a couple of years back, the gentleman who lives there invited me to help myself and told me, "that's why it's there!"<br />
<br />
He also shared that there used to be a pair of clippers in the basket that were to be used to pick the fruit if the basket was empty. But then, someone stole them. <br />
<br />
I like to think that A LOT of people walk by enjoying the fresh air and breathtaking views on the Riviera in Santa Barbara.<br />
<br />
A FEW people enjoy the fruit.<br />
<br />
But ONLY ONE person stole the clippers.<br />

But it is a nice touch.<br />

Located in the coastal community of Ventura, California, <a href="http://www.alignmentbeach.com/about-the-b-e-a-c-h/" target="_blank">Brenna Maggio</a> is inspiring people to kick off their shoes and get their bones in alignment. Or to "<a href="https://nutritiousmovement.com/product/move-your-dna-e-book/" target="_blank">Move Their DNA</a>" in a better way. Or to at least know what may be contributing to the issues in their tissues.<br />
<br />
It was fun to have Brenna look at my alignment, to get a read on my read, so-to-speak. Much like a massage treatment reveals areas of tension, aliveness, weakness and strain, this Introductory session was informative and validating. Not only because it was consistent with my point of view, but also because it's a simple framework to approach something that's infinitely complex.<br />
<br />

metaphors that made an immediate impression on me when I started practicing
massage was the term “Cement Back”. You don’t have to be a bodyworker to
understand the difficulty one might encounter when working with tissue that’s
analogous to the consistency of cement. Where do you even begin? Plus, how must
that person feel living inside a body whose soft, flexible tissue seems to have
hardened into place.</span>

ways people refer to these layers of tension that build up between and within
the neuromatrix of our bodies. “I have lots of knots in my back… I carry all my
tension in my neck and shoulders… I’m not very flexible…. I really need to
stretch more…” are just a few of the common phrases I hear from folks looking
to get some relief.</span></div>

imagining this ubiquitous tissue that connects the entire body as fluid and
flexible – like it feels after exercise, after conscious relaxation, after
massage – can help create that physical state of being. Even more than thinking
about how any one or synergistic group of muscles function, focusing your
mind’s eye on what I call “fascial fluidity” throughout the entire body during
exercise (and stillness for the matter) can produce more positive outcomes than
just the activity alone. </span></div>

Of course, we all know that most of us can't schedule a massage everyday. But we can move every day. Eat everyday. Meditate everyday. Sleep well. Tell our loved ones how much they mean to us every day. All of this is what matters most to your health.<br />

Another thing you can do everyday -- and actually do without even realizing it -- is stretch and self-massage. The trick is to do these things consciously and with intention.<br />

You wake up and stretch, naturally. You get in and out of your car. Up and down from your desk. All of these everyday activities involve stretching the tissues of your body. Incredibly relaxing and at the same time effective, I’ve recently been trained in Manual Lymphatic Drainage, based on <a href="http://www.vodderschool.com/">Dr. Vodder’s</a> approach. This methodical, meditative massage works to support a lymph system that may be not be functioning at it’s best. And also to support one that is.<br />
<br />
Many things, including traditional Swedish massage, help support <a href="http://www.lymphomation.org/lymphatic.htm">the body’s lymph system</a>. Since it’s not a closed system and does not have it’s own pump, its flow is generated with physical movement and deep breathing. While that may seem simple enough, often this is a challenge for people who are ill, injured or who have had any kind of flow impairment. Furthermore, if the system does get backed up, it’s hard for the body to catch up without some outside help, since its progression is quite slow and accumulation of fluids might cause lymph valves to reverse. So, it’s no wonder someone came up with a way to manually help things along, especially given the superficial placement (i.e. not far beneath the surface of the skin) of many of the nodes. This explains why the pressure of this technique is quite light; a deeper touch might bypass effective “contact” of this particular aspect of the body.<br />
<br />
The massage is gentle and often recommended for people who are working to generally detoxify the body, on cleanses and more specifically, for local edema. For instance, if someone has an accumulation of fluid around his or her knee post surgery, the therapist could perform treatments with the limb raised, first simply getting gravity on board for better drainage. Then, one would slowly and thoroughly clear space for the excess fluid further ahead on the “lymphatic path” toward the heart. After the path is more spacious, the affected area is worked on to help move the excess fluid into the natural flow. Shorter, more frequent sessions might be advised to see better results. Part muscle-testing, part massaging the weakened attachments that inhibit proper alignment, this approach works immediately to correct structural imbalance, creating more stability, strength and balance.<br /><br />From my perspective, when the muscular system is not working the way it’s ultimately designed to work, you’re heading in the wrong direction. While your body can compensate, it’s best to recruit the “right” muscles for whatever job you’re asking your body to do—whether it’s walking, throwing a ball, or standing in a proud yoga warrior pose. The beauty of the body is that it can—and will—compensate in order to get you through your task if the “right” muscles aren’t available or responding well. The downside is that compromise will likely lead to weakness, discomfort and eventually pain and/or total inhibition in areas that aren’t working properly.<br /><br />While the body is a process, ever changing and never perfectly aligned, it’s definitely worth the time to identify your body’s tendencies and get—or stay—headed in a strong and stable direction. MAT can really help you get individual and specific information about your body mechanics and jumpstart those muscles that need reactivation or strength building for your “machine” (body) to work to the best of it’s ability.
